The Center for Computer-Assisted Legal Instruction, ("CALI,” "us," "we," or "our") is a not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) corporation incorporated in Minnesota, USA, with its principal place of business at 565 W. Adams Street, Chicago, IL, 60661, USA. We are dedicated to providing online tutorials, casebooks, podcasts and other legal education materials to those interested in learning about the law, including faculty, staff and students at Member law schools and at Affiliate Members, through our Website.
If you reside in or are located in the European Union ("EU") CALI is the data controller of all “Personally Identifiable Information” (i.e., your name, IP address, login IDs, and any other information that can be used to identify you) collected via the Website as set out in this Privacy Policy.
The purpose of this Privacy Policy is to inform you of CALI’s purpose of processing Personally Identifiable Information, what CALI collects, CALI’s retention period for holding your Personally Identifiable Information data, and who the Personally Identifiable Information data will be shared with.
Purpose - The purpose of this Privacy Policy is to describe how CALI collects, uses and shares information about you through websites owned and controlled by us, including https://www.cali.org, and all related sites and pages (collectively referred to as the "Website"). Please read this notice carefully to understand what we do. If you do not understand any aspects of our Privacy Policy, please feel free to contact us at feedback at cali.org. Your use of our Website is also governed by our Terms of Use.
What CALI Collects and How CALI Uses It - CALI collects a variety of information from visitors to our Website. We may track, collect and aggregate information indicating, among other things, which pages on our Website were visited, the order in which they were visited, when they were visited, and which hyperlinks were "clicked." We also collect information from the URLs from which you linked to our Website. Collecting such information may involve logging the IP address, operating system and browser software used by each user of the Website. CALI may be able to determine from an IP address a visitor’s Internet Service Provider and the geographic location of the visitor’s point of connectivity. All Personally Identifiable Information stored by CALI is stored on servers located in the United States.
CALI uses Personally Identifiable Information which you provide to us for the following purposes:
- To allow you to access and use portions of the Website and to provide any information, or services that you request from us, such as downloading an eLangdell® casebook.
- To allow CALI to provide technical support and security. We may use Personally Identifiable Information to provide technical support to you, where required, and to ensure the security of our services and the Website.
- We use Personally Identifiable Information collected when you sign-up for our various email or update services to send you the messages in connection with the Website, bug fixes to CALI Author software, or the availability of new content. CALI may also archive this information and/or use it for future communications with you, where we are legally entitled to do so.
- Monitor usage of educational materials, to maintain quality, and to ensure proper operation of CALI’s Website.
- Contact former conference attendees about upcoming CALI events.
CALI also uses cookies to keep you logged in as you visit each page at the Website or start a lesson. If you are running a lesson and clear your browser cookies you will get an alert that your scores are no longer being saved because the Website no longer knows who you are.
Retention - If you reside or are located in the EU, we keep your Personally Identifiable Information for no longer than necessary for the purposes for which the Personally Identifiable Information is processed. The length of time we retain Personally Identifiable Information depends on the purposes for which we collect and use it and/or as required to comply with applicable laws and to establish, exercise or defend our legal rights. Generally, your Personally Identifiable Information is retained for as long as you maintain an account at our Website; further some Personally Identifiable Information may be retained for longer periods of time to allow for analysis of content in CALI Lessons to allow CALI to make improvements in our legal educational materials.
Third Parties that your Information is Shared With - CALI has a legitimate interest in data collection. Data is collected and maintained by CALI for its exclusive use, subject to the following exceptions:
- First, limited information (name, title, law school, address, telephone, and e-mail address) collected from conference attendees through the Conference for Law School Computing® registration process is provided free of charge to CALI Conference sponsors who request it for the sponsor’s use. CALI, and its co-conference host(s), reserves the right to reject any sponsor and any sponsor’s request. This information cannot be further sold, traded, or distributed by any CALI Conference sponsor.
- Second, authors of educational materials on the Website receive periodic reports on their material’s usage. This includes aggregate users per institution or user type, but does not allow for the identification of any particular user.
- Third, aggregate usage numbers are available to members. For example, CALI may provide a law school with usage numbers broken out by graduation date or full-time student enrollment. This does not allow for the identification of any particular user.
- Fourth, CALI Virtual Awards reports student name, school, year and the course in which the CALI Excellence for the Future Award® was earned is publicly available from the Website. This information is provided to CALI by students' law schools. CALI does not share, rent, sell, or trade this information with any third party. It is the responsibility of the Registrar at each law school participating in the CALI Excellence for the Future Award program to determine whether their students will also receive CALI Virtual Awards; students can override their school’s decision by emailing webmaster at cali.org and request that their virtual award be posted or removed. CALI is not responsible for any loss, damages or injury resulting from a law school or student’s participation in the CALI Excellence for the Future Award or CALI Virtual Awards programs. All errors in the CALI Excellence for the Future Award certificates are the sole responsibility of the law school. Although CALI, working with law school Registrars, will endeavor to fix errors on certificates.
- Fifth, when required, CALI may share your Personally Identifiable Information with various government authorities in response to subpoenas, court orders, or other legal process; to establish or exercise our legal rights or to protect our property; to defend against legal claims; or as otherwise required by law. In such cases CALI reserves the right to raise or waive any legal objection or rights available to us.
Exceptions to Sharing Information about Lesson Runs - CALI will not share the results of specific Lessons run on the Website (including your Personally Identifiable Information) with third parties without the explicit permission of the student running the lesson, except under the following circumstances.
- Educational Purpose – Students who run a Lesson on the Website (or on their school’s web site created by their professor) using the CALI LessonLink, AutoPublish, or QuizWright® services consent to the following information being collected and reported to their professor who assigned the particular lesson: name, score, responses to individual questions, essay response, date and time lesson was accessed, and any other information collected as a result of the student’s accessing the lessons and deemed necessary for the professor to teach the student.
- Disciplinary Action – When requested in writing by a student or a member law school (or affiliate member) in connection with a disciplinary action or proceeding instituted by the member school (or affiliate) against a named student, CALI will release to the requesting party any information stored in its database concerning lessons run including but not limited to, Lesson titles, and scores for that particular student.
Visitors to some areas of the CALI Website must register with their name, school and email address. CALI may use the provided information in order to contact the visitor by email for the purpose of: a) completing or confirming a transaction made on a CALI Website by the Visitor, b) providing notification concerning a change in a CALI Website terms of use or privacy policy, c) providing notification of a change in the visitor's standing or status of that visitor's account or subscription to a CALI Website or product. These transactional or relationship mailings are necessary and allow CALI to maintain its quality of services. Visitors may not opt out of these transactional or relationship emailings. Additionally, CALI may send emails which are neither for transactional nor relationship purposes. Emails which are not for transactional or relationship purposes, such as emails that are primarily for promotional purposes, will include instructions for the Visitor to opt-out of all future emails that are not transactional or relationship.
We consider the confidentiality and security of your information to be of the utmost importance. We will use industry standard physical, technical and administrative security measures to keep your Personally Identifiable Information confidential and secure and will not share it with third parties, except as otherwise provided in this Privacy Policy, or unless such disclosure is necessary in special cases, such as a physical threat to you or others, as permitted by applicable law. Because the Internet is not a 100% secure environment we cannot guarantee the security of Personally Identifiable Information, and there is some risk that an unauthorized third party may find a way to circumvent our security systems or that transmission of your information over the Internet will be intercepted. It is your responsibility to protect the security of your login information. Please note that e-mail communications are typically not encrypted and should not be considered secure.
If CALI decides to change its privacy policy, CALI will post notice of those changes on the CALI Homepage so our users are always aware of what information CALI collects, how CALI uses it, and under what circumstances, if any, CALI discloses it. CALI will use information in accordance with the privacy policy in effect at that time.
Some transactions on CALI Website are processed off of the CALI Website by a third-party transaction processing company. Such transactions and information given to the third-party are subject to the privacy policy and terms of service associated with that company.
