Introduction to Search Logic and Strategies

This lesson is designed for students taking an introductory legal research course who are already somewhat familiar with online research on Westlaw and Lexis. Students will learn search term selection strategies and the mechanics of terms and connectors searching for both systems. This lesson should be useful for students with basic or intermediate searching knowledge and experience.


Learning Outcomes


On completion of the lesson, the student will be able to:


1. List the order that search connectors are performed.

2. State the three rules to follow to avoid the differences between Lexis and Westlaw.

3. Formulate a search using connectors in both Lexis and Westlaw.
